Excellence in Golf
Excellence in Golf is the name I have given to a theory. If the theory is correct, then I know how to build a golf club that is provably better than any golf club that has ever been built. EIG is not the result of a flash of brilliance, but rather was the accidental by-product of years of hard work devoted to a different goal.
Time constraints led to my giving up golf at the beginning of medical school. A stroke of financial good fortune in the mid-eighties allowed me the luxury of retiring before my fiftieth birthday. My father, an avid golfer, convinced me to take up the game again after my retirement. The dazzling success of the senior tour and the surprising rapidity with which my game returned rekindled my boyhood dream of trying for the PGA tour as a senior. But just as I lacked the requisite skill as a youth, nothing had changed by the time I reached the magical age of 50. Undaunted, I decided to apply the analytical skills that I had learned as a physician to find the flaws in my golf game and correct them. Between the countless hours spent reading golf books in libraries and my time spent on the range or the course, I had the gradual realization that there are design flaws present in virtually all golf clubs. These flaws interfere with the mechanisms of how the brain and body function together to swing the golf club. I am virtually certain that I know how to correct this interference. Given the chance, I can prove it.
Initially I believed that major manufacturers would help with the patenting process, but after three years of discussion, it was obvious that no manufacturer was interested in dealing with unpatented products regardless of their potential merits. After visiting with three patent attorneys and examining hundreds of patents myself out of over seven thousand golf club patents, I decided to seek brand name protection before attempting to patent the designs myself. My wife and I were on our way to visit our daughter and grandchildren. As was our custom, we were listening to Rush. He was talking about his new passion for golf. The idea for Excellence in Golf was borne.
